A ROLE MODEL FOR OUR TIMES

Named patron Saint of all priests in the Universe by Pope Pius XI, the Saintly Priest of Ars has been seen by all his successors as the role model for all the clergy. Saint John Paul II said: “The figure of the Priest of Ars is eternal”. In 1986, during his visit to France, he declared on three separate occasions : “The Priest of Ars remains an outstanding role model for all countries through the accomplishment of his ministry, the holiness of his ministry.

Following on, Pope Benedict XVI said: “Far from reducing the figure of Saint John Mary Vianney as a mere example, as magnificent as it might be, indeed the finest devotional spirituality of the 19th century, it is necessary to seize the prophetic strength which distinguishes him in his human and sacerdotal personality.” The gift of his life, a deep cohesion between his teaching and his practical pastoral action makes him a powerful example for each priest. What is striking is the way of his unconditional surrender to the task. Each priest encounters during his ministry, a divide between what he preaches and his actual actions in the world. With the Priest of Ars we can see a seamless approach to his ministry. It led a pilgrim who encountered him, to say : “I have seen God in a man!”

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE PRIEST OF ARS

“A good shepherd, a pastor after God’s heart, is the greatest treasure which the good Lord can grant to a Diocese, and one of the most precious gifts of divine mercy.”

“Oh !

the priest

is something

very big !”

A PRIVILEGED COMMUNICATOR OF THE WORD OF GOD

In his time, a large number of people came to Ars to meet Saint John Mary Vianney. They were seeking advice, a special prayer and more generally some form of consolation. Today, the Saintly Priest still attracts huge numbers of Christian pilgrims and priests.
Through his simplicity of life, his unbreakable faith, he still speaks to our contemporaries and reminds each of us of the fundamental reality of our lives: “God is here!”
Strong of his powerful mediation, the SJMV turns to him to ask that priests are always connected during their ministry to the gift of grace received at the time of their ordinations.

AN INHERITANCE TO CONVEY

The SJMV wants to promote the life of Saint John Mary Vianney who, as a role model, can generate a renewal of sacerdotal excellence in the Universal Church. It wants to pass on what has been learnt from the Priest of Ars, together with the essential Church‘s doctrine.
We love to hear Pope Benedict XVI say: “The teaching given to us by the Saintly Priest of Ars is that a priest must have an intimate connection with Christ, and this relation must grow day by day. It is only through his love of Christ that a priest can teach this union to his flock, this intimate friendship with the Divine Master. This is the only way to touch his people’s heart and open it to the merciful love of the Lord. There is no other way for the priest to communicate his enthusiasm and spiritual vitality to the congregation entrusted to him by our Lord.”

“The priest

continues

the work

of Redemption

on earth.”

THE PRIEST OF ARS WELCOMES YOU !

Sitting on the very site where Pope Jean Paul II celebrated mass in 1986, the sacerdotal Foyer is at once a large guest house dedicated to the service of priesthood. It is run by a number of priests, consecrated women and SJMV lay members. It is open to all priests.

Everyone should feel at home there, and enjoy a prayerful atmosphere full of warmth and simplicity, reflecting the heartfelt welcome that the Holy Curé D’ars would have given his fellow priests. Devised to cater for visiting pilgrims, it also conducts retreats and formation meetings (training).

A TRAINING IN THE GRACE OF ARS

Supported by the undisputable grace of Ars and the charism of the SJMV, the International Seminary can excel in its mission. To live in the Seminary, a true school of the Gospel, signifies living as followers of Christ as did the Apostles, to let oneself be initiated by Him to the service of the Father and Mankind. It is to live blessed by the Holy Spirit, to be with Christ, the Good Shepherd and train to provide a better sacerdotal service to the Church and to the world. To train for priesthood is to give a personal response to Christ‘s fundamental question: “Do you love me?”. This answer, for the future priest, can only be the total surrender of his life.
