"The SJMV seeks to help each of its members to fully live out his vocation and mission as diocesan priest in the spirit of the Curé d’Ars. The SJMV also invites its members to pursue this ideal in some degree of community life and even, if the ministry permits, in sharing life under the same roof." (The SJMV Statutes, n. 26 — translated from the French)
Fraternities of community life
All members meet at least once a month in local fraternities of 3 to 6 priests. Some of them live in fraternities of shared life. These meetings revolve round the celebration of the Eucharist, adoration, some sharing of the Word of God in connection with the ministry of each member, some time to deepen their knowledge of the doctrine and also time for fraternal life and brotherly relaxation.
… in the service of the mission : characteristics
Prayer is considered to be the source of evangelization and the foundation of brotherhood : silent prayer in common, some of the Hours of the Office celebrated together, and also periods of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The faithful are always invited, for greater apostolic fruitfulness.
The common mission
It is based on the will to carry out a common mission received from the bishop of the diocese all together, not individually. The parish is the preeminent setting for that. Each priest is in charge of his own ministry, with his own responsibilities etc., but they cooperate in the fulfilling of the one mission. Firmly anchored in prayer, such cooperation finds its achievement in the discerning of the various pastoral needs. Then, for them together with committed Christians close to them, it means welcoming the gift of the Holy Spirit, in order to let themselves be constantly renewed in their preaching of the Gospel.
In the spirit of the Curé d’Ars
This reference to the Holy Curé as patron saint sets its own imprint on the life of each fraternity and on the ministry of each of its priests : the importance of the sacraments (the Eucharist and Penance), special care for the mission (evangelization, the liturgical life, the particular care given to those most in need…), the place reserved for the Blessed Virgin, the brotherly relations with fellow-priests etc.
